MP criticizes TSC teacher promotion policy

Kitutu Masaba MP(Right)Clive Ombane.

The Member of Parliament (MP) of Kitutu Masaba, Nyamira County Clive Ombane has criticized the Teacher Service Commission’s (TSC’s) promotion criteria, highlighting the demoralizing impact of teachers stagnating in one job grade until retirement.

Ombane called on TSC CEO Nancy Macharia to reshape the sector’s dynamics, fostering an environment where teachers can excel in instructional approaches rather than feeling intimidated.

The MP also raised concerns about the recent promotion advertisements for Principals and Deputy Principals, noting that many declined due to heavy responsibilities coupled with insufficient compensation.

Additionally, he called upon the government to address the shortage of teachers hindering the success of Junior Secondary School (JSS) Education.

Ombane contested the government’s claim of employing 56,000 teachers, emphasizing that it’s inadequate considering the vast student population.

“Resolving this education challenge requires a more balanced teacher employment strategy,” he asserted.

As a member of the parliamentary education committee, Ombane pledged to advocate for increased teacher recruitment and promotion.
