  • Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has ordered an audit of the county’s day secondary school feeding programme amid concerns that students continue to be sent home over extra fees despite a county subsidy.
  •  The review will involve consultations with parents, students, teachers and school administrators to assess the programme’s effectiveness in reducing education costs.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has called for an audit of the county’s day secondary school feeding programme following concerns over its implementation and the continued increase in school fees.

Despite the county government subsidising fees and reducing the annual cost per student from Ksh22,000 to Ksh12,000, hundreds of learners are reportedly still being sent home over additional fee requirements.

The governor has directed county officials to engage parents, students, teachers and school administrators to assess the effectiveness of the feeding programme subsidy and its impact on making education affordable.

Nassir said the county government will seek first-hand feedback from stakeholders during a review exercise scheduled for next week.

“Next week, I will deploy county officials to engage parents, students and school administrators in reviewing the implementation of feeding programmes in our day secondary schools,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders to cooperate during the exercise, noting that the review is aimed at reducing education costs and improving access to learning for students from needy and vulnerable families.
