Moi Nyabohanse Girls closed indefinitely following sudden death of Form Four student

Moi Nyaboanse Girls School, with Inset of the Late Deborah Nchagwa

Moi Nyabohanse Girls’ High School, in Migori County, was closed indefinitely yesterday following the death of a Form Four student.

According to Kuria West Sub County Police Commander Reuben Bett, the student collapsed at school on Sunday and was rushed to the hospital, where she died.

Following the sudden death, students went on a rampage demanding an explanation from the administration on the cause of the death of their colleague.

“We learned about the unrest and rushed to the institution to restrain students from causing any damage to the school property. They then cooled down, but the school management board took precautionary measures to close the school,” he said.

The police identified the deceased, whose body was taken to Lifecare Hospital in Migori town, as Deborah Nchaqwa Mohera, 17 years old.

Her tearful father, Evans Mohera, blamed the school administration for not relaying the sad information about the death of his daughter early enough to enable him to join hands with them to help rescue her life.

“My daughter passed on at 11am, but I was informed about the sad news late at 8pm, and I wonder about the regard these people have towards me as a parent,” he said.

He appealed to the police to investigate the cause of the death and do justice to the departed girl, her parents and colleagues.

Efforts by Education News to contact the Migori County Director of Education, Jacob Onyiego, for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not return his calls.
