MoE praised for the decision to involve schools in tree planting campaign

The Ministry of education has been praised for encouraging schools to incorporate pupils in tree planting  activities, for collective conservation of the environment and increasing food security in the country.

Speaking during a tree planting exercise at Kiogoro hill near Kamela Park Hotels tours operations officer Simon Gichana said the move is timely at this time when climate change has become a global thread.

“Global warming is an international threat that calls for a rapid response and young people are the right people to undertake this mission,” he said.

He told communities to encourage pupils to plant many trees especially fruit trees like avocados, mangoes and guavas for both environmental beautification, shelter and food without neglecting indigenous trees because they play a dual role of both environment conservation and demonstration of culture.

Gichana,said that the Hotel Kamel Park will continue to partner with other organizations like Special Programmes Africa Consortium(SPAC) to plant more than 10,000 at various schools by early next year in response to President Ruto’s call to increase forest cover in the country.

Gichana who is a former teacher now turned a businessman and musician said his company will use music to sensitize the public on the importance of conserving the environment by avoiding unwanted tree felling, careless dumping of garbage and the contamination of water sources.

He told his colleagues to compose music based on the protection of endanger species of animals like elephant, birds, trees and other historical sites like caves and hills for cultural and tourism purposes.

During the exercise that took place on Monday,March 24, 2024;that included schools like Olympic, Hurricane and Ogembo Preparatory, 500 trees were planted.

Special Programme African Consortium( SPAC) Chief Executive officer Grace Nyaera asked teachers to use the ongoing Kisii County Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association( KEPSSA competitions) at Cardinal Otunga Mosocho to encourage the youth to love their environment.

The CEO advised schools to collect the available plenty of water during ongoing rain season and keep them in tanks for later use.

She lauded Kisii County Director of education Philip Chirchir for his time to encourage school to take active roles in conservation of the environment and asked other leaders and organizations to follow suit.
