Mount Kenya University (MKU) will partner with parents across the country to offer affordable courses like those offered by local technical and vocational training institutes.
Addressing parents and their children at Kenyenya town on Friday during the University’s outreach service, MKU Kisii campus Director Dr. Simeon Nyakwara asked parents to enroll their children in the satellite campus to gain highly marketable technical skills.
“The main reason for creating satellite learning centres at various parts of the country is to bring valuable services close to students and cut the costs incurred by parents as they struggle to get money for education of their children,” said Dr. Nyakwara.
Dr. Nyakwara noted that technical skills currently have a big market demand in the advancing world of technology.
“The world is evolving at a very high speed and this calls for training in science-related fields to enable our children fit in this ever-competitive world,” he said.
He said that one of the reasons the private sector invested in education is to provide an alternative avenue for students who are not absorbed by public institutions.
The Director said that the university had increased opportunities for learning by encouraging online classes for interested students.
“You can study from anywhere at any time within your convenience at pocket-friendly costs,” Dr. Nyakwara said.
He asked secondary school principals to guide Form Four candidates on their career road map.
Dr. Nyakwara further noted that a candidate who scored a D plus had great chances of studying in the University by starting at Certificate level and progress gradually to PhD. level.
“Enrolling in a TVET does not mean you are incapable of studying to even PhD,” he advised.
The Director asked parents and their children to grab the opportunity extended by HELB to acquire funds to enable them equip themselves with relevant and sustainable skills.
