Leaders of a village in Mandera County have banned the use, and sale of miraa(khat) in order to protect school-going children from the vice.
Residents of Khalija village in Mandera North agreed to fight use of the stimulant on all fronts, and have set punitive measures to limit use.
Omar Abdi, a resident want miraa chewing banned saying it is destroying the lives of hundreds of youths and marriages.
He said school going children have also developed the habit of chewing the stimulant which has negatively affected school performance in the village.
The leaders claimed that khat is contributing to increased insecurity and poverty in the area.
‘’Our children aren’t dull but their over indulgence in khat has really pulled them down the academic path,’’ said Abdi.
