Ministry warns against ‘lunch fees’ during examination period

By Kevin Odera

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has warned against imposing illegal levies to students with claims of preparing for national examinations.

This comes after word reached the Ministry that students are being sent home to collect money for lunch for use during the examination period.

In a letter dated November 24, 2022 and directed to County Directors of Education, the ministry cautioned perpetrators against the act.

“This goes against the Ministry’s guidelines issued earlier on illegal levies, hence provision of lunch for candidates should not be forced on parents,” the letter read in part.

The Ministry also instructed field officers to report such cases to the headquarters immediately.

“All field officers are instructed to stop this and report such cases to this office immediately. Action will be taken against any office in whose jurisdiction such cases are reported,” it concluded.
