The Member of Parliament of Emuhaya and National Chairman of KUPPET, Omboko Milemba, has appealed to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to revise the fees paid to teachers for marking national examinations.

Speaking in the Kenya National Assembly yesterday, Milemba expressed deep concern about the current compensation provided to teachers for their diligent efforts in invigilating, supervising, and marking national exams.

“Despite their strenuous work, the KNEC often delays payments to teachers and offers them meagre compensation per script,” he lamented.

Milemba however acknowledge the KNEC’s recent efforts to increase the number of marking centers and slightly raise marking fees, but he contended that these measures fell short of adequately addressing the issue at hand.

Additionally, during a commencement ceremony at the Kenya Institute of Special Education in Kasarani, Machogu announced measures aimed at creating a more favorable examination environment.

“These include an increase in the number of exam centers to enhance accessibility and deter cheating,’ he explained.

To this end, certain items, such as handbags, briefcases, backpacks, and traditional kiondos, will no longer be permitted in exam rooms, enforced by vigilant invigilators.

The ban extends to students’ use of smartwatches, programmable calculators, and Bluetooth devices during examinations.

Moreover, center managers will now collect exam papers twice a day.

The decision to do so, as Julius Melly, Tinderet Member of Parliament and Chair of the Parliamentary Education Committee, explained, was reached in response to the realization that exam leakage predominantly affects afternoon papers.
