A student from Mukiria Technical Training Institute has died on the spot after being hit by an overspeeding lorry near Mariara River in Central Imenti Constituency.
Eyewitnesses said that the lorry was ferrying alcohol and was traveling from Meru towards Nkubu when the accident occurred.
Sources said that the lorry lost control after a brake failure before hitting the student and killing her instantly.
In an ugly turn of events, Police shot and injured one of several students who had staged demonstrations to protest against the incident.
The irate students engaged the Police in running battles for over two hours before calm was finally restored.
They called on the Meru County government to erect bumps at Mariara, Gatauga and Mutego areas saying that many people have lost their lives in those areas.
