Special Economic Zones Chairman Fred Muteti has pledged continued support for the implementation of development projects at Malivani AIC Comprehensive School.

Muteti made the commitment during a fundraising drive aimed at supporting the construction of a girls’ dormitory, drilling of a borehole, completion of phase two of the school perimeter wall and construction of two classrooms.

Promise to Mobilise Support

He said he would engage relevant leaders, including the President, to seek support for the completion of the perimeter wall and the drilling of a borehole.

“The President and the First Lady have done so much in your neighbouring school, Unoa. Now that they are done with it, I am sure he is going to listen to us and offer the necessary support in this school, including the perimeter wall and the drilling of a borehole,” said Muteti.

Support for School Scouts

In addition to his personal contribution, Muteti pledged to purchase scout uniforms for about 65 learners who are members of the school’s scout movement.

“I was a member of the scouts and I still love scouting. Today I am pledging to buy scout uniforms for all the scouts here, including those who wish to join but are unable to afford one. I am told these scouts are among the best around. Keep going because scouting instills discipline,” he said.

Muteti called upon education stakeholders, including union leaders, parents and teachers, to help address the growing cases of unrest in schools.

He noted that school administrators carry significant responsibilities and require support from all stakeholders to maintain order and provide a conducive learning environment.

“Let us try our best to talk to these children, listen to them and remind them to appreciate the little that their parents provide. They cannot have everything in the world,” he said.

He urged learners to focus on their education and avoid destructive behaviour.

“Burning schools is not a solution. Addressing issues amicably is what brings lasting solutions,” he added.

Appeal to Parents

Muteti also challenged parents to take a more active role in raising and guiding their children.

“Let us be parents enough. You cannot allow your child to control you and then expect the same child to be controlled at school. As much as freedom is necessary, there must be limits. Monitor your children, including how they use their phones and who they communicate with,” he said.

The school’s Head of Institution, Joshua Mutuse, thanked parents for supporting the fundraiser and noted that the projects were necessary due to increasing student enrolment.

“These children are performers. Let us make their lives comfortable. Good infrastructure plus hard work equals good performance,” said Mutuse.

He added that teachers were working hard to produce all-round learners and urged parents to reinforce discipline and responsibility at home.

Mutuse noted that not every request made by learners should be granted and called on parents to help children understand the importance of boundaries and personal responsibility.
