Parents have been encouraged to take full responsibility in nurturing their children and adding value to their lives.

Speaking during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at ACK St. Luke’s Wote Township Boarding Primary and Junior School, ACK Diocese of Makueni Bishop Francis Matui said the success of children can only be realised when parents cooperate with their children and involve God in shaping their future.

“Here, I always tell learners that entering through this gate means success as you leave. The majority of learners here join university after getting a strong foundation from this school. Only a few who have passed through here failed to join university, but even they have never gone to waste,” said Matui.

Social media disputes

Board of Management Chairman Bishop Emeritus Joseph Kanuku called on parents to avoid rushing to social media whenever disputes arise in schools, saying such actions often create more problems instead of solving them.

“In this digital era, it has happened in many schools, including ours. Always follow the right communication channels in solving school issues rather than rushing to social media, which in turn tarnishes the name of the school for no apparent reason,” said Kanuku.

The school principal, Onesmus Wambua, said the institution had undergone significant transformation and continued to improve academically and socially.

He appreciated parents and other stakeholders, especially the bishop, for supporting the school’s spiritual growth.

Humility among parents

Wambua urged parents to avoid bringing titles and status into school matters, saying all parents should be treated equally regardless of their positions in society.

“I am also a parent elsewhere, and when I visit a school, I go there as a parent, sit and listen to teachers and the principal. If we cling to titles, my friends, I can tell you we will not move anywhere,” Wambua said.

He added that the school’s main mission is to teach, mentor and help learners achieve their goals, calling for mutual respect among parents, teachers and learners.

“I always believe that you cannot quarrel with your house help and expect your child to be well taken care of. Kindly let us respect each other from the learner to the top,” he added.

The principal further noted that with adequate teaching staff, the school remains committed to nurturing learners academically.

He revealed that last year, 175 out of 222 candidates from the school were admitted to national schools, while others joined extra-county schools.

Call for discipline

Deputy County Director of Education Daniel Ole Munyere urged parents to start guiding children at an early age on the importance of discipline and avoiding school unrest.

“Burning schools has repercussions. Kindly let us always talk to our children and instill discipline whenever necessary,” Munyere said.

Makueni KNUT Executive Secretary Benson Ndambuki criticised the government over low capitation for primary schools, saying the Sh95 allocated per learner was insufficient.

“You promised us free primary education. Instead of increasing capitation, you are reducing it. Let us do the best for the betterment of learners,” Ndambuki said.
