Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has issued a stern warning to school heads who intend to tamper with the quality of desks the government has provided for public primary and secondary schools.

Speaking during his visit to Langas Primary School in Uasin Gishu County, Magoha expressed his concerns over allegations that some teachers are planning to interfere with the delivery of desks.

“Every desk made shall go to the child in the designated public school. We will not be sympathetic to anyone or handle with gloves those who steal from children and I warn them in broad daylight,” said Magoha

The Government has sponsored the manufacturer of over 600,000 desks for schools, in tenders that were given to local Jua Kali artisans.

He named Migori as one of the areas that teachers have attempted to divert the desks and warned that those found will face the full force of the law.

“Those teachers in the Migori area who together with some education officers think they are smarter than the government, I give them 24 hours to reverse the process that they are trying to do and ensure the desks go to the appropriate schools or we shall arrest them,” CS warned.

Magoha said over half of the desks have already been supplied with the remaining expected by the end of this week.

He also hit hard on the education field officers for sleeping on their job saying that stern actions will be taken against them.

“I have noticed that my field officers, especially at the lower level, follow me when I come to inspect schools. We are going to act swiftly to ensure they work and inspect schools no matter who they are, as long as they are paid with taxpayers’ money,” he said.

He, however, school heads and BOM to ensure that their schools comply with the Covid-19 protocols.
