Magoha to convene education stakeholders meeting

While making his statement, President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday cleared doubts on reopening of learning institutions saying the government will give succinct dates soon.

However, he directed the Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof George Magoha to call for stakeholders meeting to discuss and advise on the measures to be put in place ahead of reopening.

Earlier on, universities and colleges were scheduled to reopen by September but precise dates had not been given. However, some institutions like University of Nairobi have stated that they are not ready to reopen citing that institution has a large population that makes social distancing rule a tall order.

In the recent past, officials from the Ministry of Education led by CS Prof Magoha, PS (University Education) Simon Nabukwesi and Dr Julius Jwan PS (Technical and Vocational Training) have been touring institutions with a central aim of accessing their preparedness.

As the government contemplates on reopening, colleges and universities are required to have adequate hand-washing points, automatic sanitizer dispensers, gun thermometers, enough space for social distancing and equipped isolation facilities.

For primary and secondary schools, the ministry affirmed that learners will be provided with washable masks and ensure that all the institutions installed with water tanks.
