Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu and other officials in the Ministry of Education MoE) today appear before the National Assembly Committee on Education to shed light on why school reopening was postponed at ungodly hours.

The ministry had on April 29 directed learners, who were expected to begin reporting to school on the same day, to report as from May 6, 2024.

In a meeting chaired by Julius Melly (Tinderet), committee members expressed shock at the way the postponement was communicated few hours before the set date.

Abdul Haro (Mandera North) said the last minute announcement to delay the school term caused significant disruption for many families.

Some learners had already reported to school when the communication reached them shortly after arriving in school.

The committee is also expected to engage with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) regarding the status of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers following a court order prohibiting it from recruiting and employing student teachers and interns as its constitutional and statutory mandate applies only to employment of duly qualified and registered teachers.
