Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has reiterated the government’s commitment towards provision and support of quality education in schools.

The CS, who visited secondary schools in Kisii and Nyamira counties, asked students to work hard and achieve their goals in the pursuit of education.

Speaking to parents, teachers and students of Nyabururu Girls’ National School, Machogu lauded the Principal Joyce Orioki for her exemplary leadership and issued a cheque worth Ksh30 million and 150 computers to improve infrastructure and enhance information technology in the institution.

Flanked by Information Communication and Digital Economy CS Eliud Owalo, Nyanza Regional Director of Education (RDE) Nelson Sifuna and Kisii County Director of Education (CDE) Philip Chirchir, Machogu said that schools from the region had a big potential of succeeding in education and asked teachers and students to rise and claim their rightful positions in academic excellence.

He asked Boards of Management (BoMs) to assist schools in prioritizing projects in their institutions.

“I ask you to avoid projects that are not urgently needed in your schools but instead embark on those that are essential to propel you towards achieving good grades in national examinations,” he said.

Mrs. Orioki thanked the CS for the good gesture and promised to steer the teachers and students to post even better results in the forthcoming national examinations.

She took a swipe at critics who claimed that schools from the region stole in the 2022 KCSE examinations and termed the claims as malicious.

“This region has a track record of excelling in education. Our comeback to reclaim past glory should not be taken for granted,” she said.

In Nyamira County, the CS addressed the public at Nyambaria National School, Tombe and Kebabe Girls’ schools.

Machogu reprimanded the burning of schools in the area and termed it as devilish.

He asked the police to carry quick investigation on the cause of the recent burning of one dormitory at Kiabonyoru Girls School and two dormitories at Omonayo Secondary School in Borabu Constituency.

Machogu asked students to embrace promising subjects like computer studies and sciences to enable them to land sustainable careers after completion of their secondary education.

He thanked the Nyambaria teaching fraternity led by Chief Principal Charles Onyari for posting sterling results in the 2022 KCSE examinations.

The CS presented a cheque worth Ksh10 million and 150 computers to help the school improve its ICT infrastructure.

Tombe Girls received a cheque worth Ksh10 million and 50 computers while Kebabe Girls received Ksh10 million.

Residents thanked the ministry for championing education in the region asked the CS to follow up on the proposed establishment of Kiabonyoru University.

The parents said that establishment of the higher institution of learning in the region will cut the costs of travelling by students from the area who travel long distances to pursue the same.

Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Nyamira County Branch Chairman Job Oira appreciated Machogu for pushing for education development in the country.

He promised that his association will work harmoniously to support the government’s effort in education development but however asked the government to employ more teachers to cater for the ever increasing learners in the region’s schools.
