Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has appointed Dr Albert Kochei, Council Chairman at Multi-Media University (MMU) replacing Moses Ole Saduka who has been serving in an acting capacity since January 4.

The appointment of Dr Albert Kochei to chair the university council for three years, was hailed by stakeholders among them University Staff Academic Union (UASU).

On Monday July 2, Kochei chaired the first board meeting from where he asserted his authority at the University, which since January its leadership has been rocked with controversies due to absence of substantive chairman and the VC.

UASU MMU Chapter Secretary General Onesmus Mutio welcomed the appointment of Dr Kochei saying that Machogu should appoint a substantive Vice Chancellor.

He said the appointment of the VC should be based on the ranking of the Public Service Commission (PSC) to take over from Prof Rosebella Maranga who has been acting since January 17.

Two months ago, as a battle on appointment on substantive leadership escalated at the varsity, the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei informed Mutio that his complaints pertaining to the appointments have been directed to Machogu.

In a letter dated May 30, Koskei said, “We have taken note of the issues raised and referred the same to the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education, for further action. Please liaise with the office of the CS as may be necessary.”

Dr Abdi Mohammed, an educational consultant based in Nairobi said the delay by Machogu to appoint a substantive VC at the varsity is a major loss.

The consultant explained that the further delay in appointing the VC will obviously heighten anxiety among the stakeholders that has progressively been rising.

“Why is there a delay while the PSC conducted the interviews and ranked the candidates based on the qualifications,” said Abdi.
