Maasai Mara Varsity VC feted for championing environmental sustainability

The Maasai Mara University Vice-Chancellor , (VC) Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho, has been awarded as the Community Development for Managing the Environment Personality of the Year at the 2025 ETA Awards, Kenya.

The annual ETA Awards, held at the Machakos International Convention Center, celebrate excellence across diverse sectors, including Entertainment, Leadership and Governance, Business, and Community Work, brought  together leaders, innovators, and change-makers from across the country to acknowledge their contributions to society.

The award honours individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to community development and environmental sustainability.

During the event, Prof. Aloo-Obudho was lauded for her transformative leadership at Maasai Mara University, where she has championed initiatives that integrate environmental conservation with community engagement.

Under her stewardship, the university has implemented numerous projects aimed at protecting natural resources, promoting sustainable agriculture, and empowering local communities through education and outreach programs.

In address delivered on her behalf by Dean of Students, Mohamed A. Adan; Director of Public Relations, Marketing and Linkages, Dr. Edward Kateiya who also received the award, Prof. Aloo-Obudho expressed gratitude and reaffirmed her commitment to community-centered development.

“This recognition is not just for me, but for the entire Maasai Mara University community. Our work in environmental management and sustainable development is ongoing, and this award inspires us to do more for our students, the local communities, and the environment,” she said.

She underscored that the award underscores Maasai Mara University’s growing reputation as a hub for impactful community engagement and environmental stewardship and also highlights the institution’s role in nurturing leaders who are committed to sustainable development and social responsibility.

Through Prof. Aloo-Obudho’s leadership, the university continues to set a benchmark for integrating academic excellence with meaningful community service, demonstrating how higher education can be a catalyst for positive change in Kenya and beyond.
