The Maasai Mara University is set to expand its academic footprint with the establishment of the Johanna Ng’eno University Campus in Ololmasani Ward.

The move is aimed at increasing access to higher education in Narok County and the wider South Rift region.

The campus, approved by the university senate, is expected to admit approximately 200 students when it opens in September this year.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum, Vice-Chancellor Professor Peninah Aloo-Obudho said the institution is committed in ensuring the successful launch of the new campus.

“The university senate has approved the establishment of the college as a constituent campus of Maasai Mara University,” she said.

Prof. Aloo-Obudho revealed that a senate committee would soon visit the proposed site to assess available facilities and oversee final preparations before the official launch.

She noted that the institution would significantly improve access to university education for students from Trans Mara South and surrounding areas.

“The new campus will reduce the distance many students travel to pursue university studies and expand opportunities for higher learning in this part of the country,” she said.

Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu welcomed the senate’s decision and thanked the Ministry of Education for providing Ksh750 million in start-up funding.

He said the institution had been named after the late MP Johanna Ng’eno in recognition of his contribution to the region’s development.

“The institution will serve students from across the country and strengthen access to quality university education,” said Ntutu.

Education stakeholders attending the meeting said the establishment of the campus would position Emurua Dikirr as a centre of academic excellence while attracting investment and accelerating regional development.

The campus is expected to become one of the key higher education institutions serving learners from Narok and neighbouring counties.
