The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has lauded Kisii University law students for their humane and selfless attitude towards serving humanity after conducting an awareness week to sensitize inmates about the law.
Speaking at Kisii Prisons and Correctional Centre during an awareness week held by the students, the LSK Nyanza Region Branch Chairman Gideon Nyambati underscored the essence of enlightening the society about dictates of the law.
He said that his office will partner with Kisii University to strengthen the judicial abilities of the young lawyers from the institution.
“We shall recommend some of the sharp brains from this University to sit and determine some legal cases within the advice of the bench,” he said.
The awareness week that ended on Friday provided an opportunity for paralegals from Kisii University and the Kisii Law Courts to meet remandees and suspects at the Prison to share with them the challenges they face in the pursuit of justice.

Mr. Nyambati promised to work with other like-minded teams to educate communities pro bono about the dictates of the law in order to avert crimes in the society.
The students led by Kisii Law Courts prosecutor Mr. Paul Kimutai listened and informed inmates about court procedures, the skills and roles of a paralegal officer in the legal system, the position of the law on Gender Based Violence and
Mr. Nyambati took the inmates and students through criminal procedures, principles governing criminal law, labour and succession matters.
The inmates were filled with enthusiasm as they actively participated during the sensitization session about the procedures involved in appeal cases.
“This has been a big eye opener for the majority of us who are ignorantly rotting behind the bars,” said Anne Nyomenda, one of the inmates.
Other centres that were visited by the paralegal team included Manga Chidren’s Remand and Rehabilitation Centre.
During the occasion, the remandees were gifted with bread, soap, toilet paper and sanitary towels to the ladies.
