The Kenya Association of Retired Officers (KARO) has submitted an appeal against the removal of enhanced medical packages for retired public officers, including teachers.

This is in response to the Social Health Insurance Bill, Clause 31, which grants beneficiaries the right to essential healthcare benefits as prescribed by the Cabinet Secretary (CS) in consultation with the board.

Additionally, the bill allows beneficiaries to access private insurance coverage, meaning that they are being edged out of mainstream public insurance.

Moreover, private medical insurance typically excludes coverage for individuals aged over 65 years due to the high prevalence of non-communicable chronic illnesses such as various types of cancer, asthma, kidney failure, heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension, dementia, and Parkinson’s, among others.

KARO urges lawmakers to reconsider the removal of the enhanced medical scheme packages for retired public officers as it is crucial for ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage for this vulnerable demographic.
