Lecturers end 49-day strike after signing return-to-work deal with Govt

University lecturers have ended their 49-day strike after signing a Return-to-Work Formula with the Government of Kenya, marking a breakthrough in the standoff that paralysed learning across public universities.

The prolonged 49-day lecturers’ strike has officially ended after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) signed a Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF) with the Government of Kenya, paving the way for the resumption of learning across public universities.

The deal, signed on Wednesday between UASU officials and representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), also commits both sides to conclude negotiations for the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) within 30 days.
