Learning paralyzed as storm rips off roof in school

Learning

Learning has been disrupted at Muusini Primary School in Yatta sub-county, Machakos County after strong winds blew off roofs of various classrooms at the institution.

Some of the parents who spoke to Education News noted that the area experienced heavy rains accompanied by strong, successive gusts of wind.

The pupils therefore will be forced to study in the open because some of the walls of the said classrooms came down.

The parents complained that the classes have been left in a dilapidated condition even before the incident occurred.

They pleaded with the area Member of Parliament, Robert Basil Ngui, to intervene and build new classes at the school.

Pupils stranded at Muusini Primary School after their classroom was brought down by strong winds.

“The children are still using the old classrooms from over twenty years ago. Even the ECDE classes have crumbled to the ground and this should be a wake-up call to our MP to build us new classes,” said Rose Ngei, a parent at the school.

“We are worried about our children because most of the classes have huge cracks, this was danger lurking.

“It luckily it happened at night, otherwise, we would be telling a different story,” she added.

The parents also complained about the sanitation situation in the school stating that the toilets being used by the children have cracks.

“We need a makeover, starting from the classrooms, toilets and even the playgrounds; they need to be leveled because during rains, the water is passing like a river to houses neighboring the school,” said another parent.
