Learners from disadvantaged families in Kisumu Central Sub-county have received donations of school accessories, including shoes and uniforms, from the office of Senator Tom Ojienda.
The initiative, which has been warmly received by parents and learners, aims to support vulnerable children to remain in school comfortably.
The donations were distributed to several primary schools in Kisumu, including Obinju Primary School, Manyatta Primary School, and Kudho Primary School.
Speaking during the exercise, the Senator’s Office Manager Seth Okumu said the programme specifically targeted learners from informal settlements and disadvantaged backgrounds.
“The assortment of donations, including shoes, targeted learners from schools in informal settlements such as Obinju, Manyatta, and Kudho primary schools,” said Okumu.
The officer in charge of Senator Ojienda’s office, Lydia Odhiambo, who spoke on behalf of the senator, assured residents that the office remained committed to supporting needy learners across the county.
“The Senator tasked us to ensure that learners from disadvantaged families across the county do not go to school barefoot or without uniforms,” said Odhiambo.
She disclosed that the office had already distributed 25 school uniforms to learners at Obinju Kanyakwar Primary School, although many more children still lacked basic learning necessities.
“We have distributed uniforms and shoes to several learners, but there is still a huge need for more support because many children are still lacking essential school items,” she added.
Odhiambo noted that the donations were part of the senator’s ongoing outreach programmes aimed at uplifting vulnerable communities through education support initiatives.
School heads who received the donations praised Senator Ojienda for what they described as his continued philanthropic efforts and commitment to supporting education in Kisumu County.
“My name is Eddy Ochieng’, and we thank Professor Ojienda for his continued steadfast support to local schools in Kisumu County,” said the head teacher of Kudho Primary School.
He further commended the senator after the school received more than 30 pairs of shoes for learners.
The Deputy Head teacher at Obinju Kanyakwar Primary School, Judith Okeyo, also thanked the senator for the donations, saying the support had greatly motivated learners.

“The donation has really excited the learners and boosted their morale,” said Okeyo.
Okeyo also highlighted the challenges facing the school, appealing to the senator to further support the institution through the purchase of sports kits for learners and assistance in constructing the school’s administration block.
