Local leaders in Lari Sub‑County have urged young people to embrace technical training and agribusiness as a pathway out of unemployment, urging them to take advantage of government investments in vocational education and the region’s favourable farming climate. The leaders said the two sectors offer practical, sustainable opportunities for economic independence at a time when formal employment remains limited.

Speaking during Madaraka Day celebrations at Nyambari in Lari Kirenga Ward, Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Samuel Kariuki appealed to parents and youth to shift their focus from traditional white‑collar jobs and instead consider technical and vocational skills as a reliable route to self‑employment. Kariuki said the government has heavily invested in equipping technical institutes with modern machinery and qualified trainers to ensure learners receive hands‑on, market‑ready skills.

“Our technical institutes have been equipped with the best machinery, and we have experienced tutors who can train our youth until they are sharp,” Kariuki said, adding that the improved facilities provide a strong foundation for young people to thrive in a competitive, skills‑driven economy.

Kariuki expressed concern over the growing number of idle youth in villages and trading centres, saying many remain jobless despite having the potential to create their own opportunities. He encouraged them to tap into their creativity and consider starting small enterprises after completing technical courses, noting that vocational training instills confidence and practical know‑how needed to run a business.

His message was echoed by leaders present at the event, among them Lari Kirenga Ward MCA Josphat Kinyanjui, Sub‑County Police Commander Emily Ngaruiya, and Senior Assistant County Commissioners Benard Mbogo and Evlyne Moraa. They emphasized that empowering youth through skills and enterprise is key to reducing crime and promoting community development.

Kariuki also urged residents to take agribusiness seriously, saying Lari’s favourable climate offers vast potential for profitable farming ventures. He commended area MP Mburu Kahangara for lobbying for the tarmacking of major roads, noting that improved infrastructure has made it easier for farmers to transport produce and access markets, boosting local economic activity.

MCA Kinyanjui encouraged young people to explore their talents in sports and the arts, pointing out that many have built successful careers in football, athletics, drawing and painting. He said these sectors have already proven to be viable job creators, with some local artists gaining recognition beyond the country.
