Laikipia University has been closed indefinitely following ongoing industrial action by staff members affiliated with the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) and the University Academic Staff Union (UASU).
In a notice released on Thursday, October 30, 2025, the university’s Senate announced that normal academic activities had been severely disrupted by the strike, prompting an immediate shutdown of the institution.
The decision was reached during a special Senate meeting held the same day.
All students — except those under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program — have been instructed to vacate the institution’s premises by Friday, October 31, 2025, at noon. Learning for TVET students will continue uninterrupted.
“Following the industrial action that has disrupted learning at the University, the Senate, in its meeting held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, resolved that the University be closed with immediate effect,” reads the notice signed on behalf of the Registrar, Academic Affairs, M. Francis G. Wanjama.

The administration assured students and parents that further communication regarding reopening dates will be issued through the university’s official website and communication channels.
The strike at Laikipia University mirrors ongoing unrest across several public universities, where lecturers union is protesting over unmet welfare and remuneration agreements. The disruption has affected lectures, examinations, and administrative services.
With the latest closure, thousands of students now face uncertainty over the academic calendar, while parents and guardians express concern over the long-term impact of recurrent industrial action in public universities.
As negotiations continue between unions and the government, stakeholders are urging for a swift resolution to avoid further disruption to higher learning.
