Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has officially commissioned three newly built classrooms at Cafgem Bareto Primary School in Samburu Sub-county, in a move expected to improve learning conditions for hundreds of pupils in the area.
The project was implemented by Hairati Women’s Enterprise, a local women-led construction company, under the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development Project (KEMFSED) funded by the World Bank.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Governor Achani said the new facilities would help ease congestion in the school, where learners have long struggled with inadequate infrastructure.
She said that many pupils in rural parts of Kwale County study in overcrowded and poorly ventilated classrooms, a situation that undermines effective learning.
“These new classrooms are more than just buildings, they are a foundation for better learning and a brighter future for our children,” she said.
The governor also said that access to ICT equipment will enable learners to acquire digital skills, which are increasingly essential in the modern world, adding that the county government is keen on bridging the digital divide between urban and rural schools by ensuring that all children have equal opportunities to embrace technology.

The governor further said that investment in education infrastructure is part of her administration’s broader agenda to ensure every child in Kwale has access to quality learning.
She called on stakeholders to partner with the county in addressing the gaps, pledging to continue lobbying for more resources and partnerships to expand infrastructure, improve teacher support, and enhance the overall quality of education in the county.
The governor also encouraged women, youth, and persons with disabilities to register as companies so they could benefit from government and donor-funded tenders.
She said the inclusion of community-based enterprises in such projects not only improves service delivery but also empowers locals economically.
Amina Mwachiro, one of the parents in attendance expressed hope that the improved facilities would motivate children to remain in school.
“With better classrooms, our children will be encouraged to learn and stay in school. We thank the county government and its partners for this support,” she said.
