University student leaders have called for demos every Friday to protest the delayed disbursement of Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds.
The call comes at a time when President William Ruto assured that funds were released to HELB a fortnight ago. He gave the assurance during his three day visit to Kisii County, at Kisii National Polytechnic yesterday, a claim which the Kenya University Student Organisation (KUSA) has disputed.
“Students no longer eat chicken but eat like and with chicken,” Anthony Manyara KUSO`s president said.
Manyara said that the body is concerned of the ‘careless shifting of blame from office to office while students are suffering’. He said that the students are left with no one to look after their needs since majority of Kenyans are focused on Azimio demos.
“A final reminder is issued to HELB officers and concerned government ministries that the HELB loan is the lifeline of students` survival in all institutions of higher learning and its delay is akin to closing down of universities or starving students with the intention of killing them,” he said.
HELB loans has always been a game changer for thousands of students especially those ailing from poor families as it has been a source of upkeep and to some they use it to pay school fees.
The other day, HELB CEC told the MPs that a total of 140, 000 students would miss the funding as the agency had ran out of funds.
