The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Samburu has called for an increase in allowances for invigilators and supervisors participating in the upcoming national examinations.

The KUPPET Samburu Executive Secretary, William Lengoiyap, conveyed that teachers in Samburu County are dismayed by the mandatory and meager compensation for their roles in exam supervision and invigilation.

“This situation has prompted some teachers to contemplate boycotting the exercise unless their remuneration is enhanced.  A significant issue is that some teachers have been assigned duties far from their homes and workstations,” he stated.

Lengoiyap furthure said that with soaring fuel prices, there is apprehension that they may be unable to reach their designated exam centers.

“The current allowances of only Ksh. 560 for supervisors and Ksh. 460 for invigilators are deemed insufficient to cover the expenses incurred in traveling such long distances,” he added.

Additionally, Lengoiyap made a plea to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and the Ministry of Education to intervene promptly and prevent an impending crisis.

He also emphasized that the escalating cost of fuel is at the root of this problem and pointed out the challenging conditions in which Samburu teachers operate.

“Despite facing issues such as insecurity, they have continued to serve the nation diligently,’ the Executive Secretary highlighted.

He further stressed the necessity for improved working conditions during the administration of this critical national exercise, acknowledging that the primary duty of teachers is to educate in their respective stations.

Lengoiyap noted that teachers feel coerced by the Ministry of Education, placing them in precarious situations regarding exam irregularities reported across Kenya.
