The Kenya Union of Post‑Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has sounded the alarm over rising insecurity in North Eastern, warning that teachers deployed to Garissa County face serious risks as schools reopen for the second term.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori said escalating violence along major travel routes and within learning institutions has already led to injuries and disrupted teachers’ ability to report back to duty. He singled out the Nairobi–Garissa Highway as a hotspot for repeated attacks, noting that some teachers have been injured. While others have abandoned their journeys or delayed reporting due to safety concerns.
“As schools open for the second term of this academic year, we urge the government to take extra measures in assuring the security of teachers stationed in Garissa County and the larger North Eastern region,” Misori said.
The union revealed that insecurity has not only affected travel but also created fear among teachers already stationed in the region. Some educators have reportedly experienced traumatic incidents even within their residential areas, leaving lasting physical and psychological effects on them and their families.

Misori urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and government security agencies to coordinate efforts to guarantee safety both in transit and at workplaces.
“Given the serious physical, emotional and mental pain the teachers face and the multifaceted security challenges in the region, we urge the Teachers Service Commission to partner with other government agencies in assuring the security of teachers,” he said.
He further stressed that no teacher in North-Eastern should be punished for exercising caution amid growing insecurity.
