KUPPET faults new KNEC guidelines to curb exam malpractice

KUPPET Narok secretary Charles Ng'eno. He has rejected the new guidelines by KNEC to curb exam cheating.

KUPPET has faulted the newly issued exam guidelines by KNEC that are invariably aimed at curbing exam malpractice, saying they are cumbersome and were not ratified through public participation.

The union’s Narok secretary Charles Ng’eno argues that the guidelines not only inconvenience teachers but over-burden them as well.

“As a union, we want to make it clear that we are opposed to the new guidelines. We kept quiet not because we approved of them but because we did not want to be seen as if we were sabotaging exams,” he said.

Addressing the press, he noted that public participation was not conducted as required by law before the rules were implemented.

One of the contentious rules is the redeployment of centre managers and supervisors, which is seen as punitive to teachers.

He wants the matter addressed urgently, noting that the union will not accept the guidelines in the future.

Concerning the payment of examiners, Ng’eno said the current rates where markers receive as low as Ksh60 per script are too low.

“We want to ask KNEC to increase payment for exam marking. The rate of inflation in the country is high and the money paid is not commensurate to the work markers do,” he said.

He, however, gave the just concluded KCSE examinations a clean bill of health, crediting the success to cooperation among stakeholders.
