Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Siaya branch Executive Secretary Sam Opondo has urged the police to speed up investigations into the death of unionist Gordon Odongo who was attacked by villagers in Rwambra sub location, Busia county.

Opondo asked the police to bring to book the culprits who caused the death of Mwer Secondary School teacher.

Opondo warned that KUPPET will ensure justice is realized and served to the slain colleague.

“We demand for speedy investigations into the matter to ensure that the culprits are brought to book and justice is served to our colleague and his family,” said Opondi, who went on to add that the teaching fraternity had lost a great contributor to national development and growth.

Onyango was in the company of a colleague along the river Nzoia dykes where he had parked his vehicle before he got attacked by locals who assumed he was a thief,

He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital where the police, who had come to his aid, had rushed him.

Augustine Swat, the assistant chief of Rwambra Sub Location, Bunyala sub county where the slain teacher was attacked, revealed that he received a call from a local who informed him that a black car had been spotted along river Nzoia dykes with hazard lights on at around 10pm on Saturday night.

He revealed that he urged the caller to take note of the car’s registration number.

He further revealed that a lot of insecurity cases have been reported in the area and that locals had gathered before moving to the location of the vehicle to check on whatever was going on.

He said he arrived at the scene 20 minutes later after notifying Port Victoria police station OCPD about the matter. The police promised to send a team to the scene.

“When I arrived at the scene, I found the locals had already set the vehicle ablaze. The driver of the car was in a critical state but he could still talk. A local called me to inform me that the victim was a teacher at Mwer Secondary School in Alego Usonga constituency of Siaya County. Immediately we took the teacher to Rwambwa health centre but on Sunday morning, I received news that he had succumbed to the injuries,” he sadly explained.

Swat expressed regret over the locals’ reacting, stating that an innocent life had been lost due to mistaken identity.

He added that the teacher was known to many people as he had taught in several schools in the area including Nyambare Secondary School.

Swat called on locals to allow the authorities  to operate according to the law after making reports instead of taking the law into their hands.

The deceased’s body has been moved to Port Victoria hospital morgue in Bunyala of Busia county.
