The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has listed accredited teacher-training colleges offering the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE), opening opportunities for candidates seeking to enter Kenya’s primary-school teaching profession.
The institutions are spread across different parts of the country, from Turkana and Wajir in the north to Kwale and Mombasa at the Coast, and from West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet in the Rift Valley to Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay in the west.
DPTE is a two-year programme designed to prepare trainees with the professional knowledge and practical skills required to teach at primary-school level. The programme is examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), giving it national examination and certification recognition.
The training is not limited to subject knowledge. Trainees are exposed to areas including languages, mathematics, child development, psychology, human and child rights, administration and other areas intended to strengthen their ability to deliver the primary-school curriculum effectively.
Graduates can subsequently seek teaching opportunities in public or private primary schools and are commonly associated with the P1 teacher designation.

For those who want to advance academically, DPTE does not necessarily have to be the end of the journey. Teacher trainees can pursue further qualifications and progress through higher levels of teacher education, including degree, master’s and doctoral studies, subject to applicable admission and professional requirements.
The minimum entry requirement for DPTE is a mean grade of C (plain) in KCSE or its equivalent. Candidates living with disabilities may be considered with a minimum mean grade of C- (minus).
The geographical spread gives aspiring teachers an opportunity to identify a training institution within or closer to their region, potentially reducing the cost and disruption associated with relocating far from home.
But the growing importance of DPTE goes beyond simply securing a teaching certificate. Kenya’s education system is undergoing significant changes under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework, increasing the demand for teachers who understand learner-centred instruction, competency development, assessment and the diverse needs of children.
The quality of teacher preparation will therefore remain central to the success of primary education. For aspiring teachers, choosing an accredited institution is an important first step, but professional growth, classroom competence and continued training will increasingly determine how effectively they respond to the changing demands of the profession.
