The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Bomet branch, has decried the delayed compensation of the family of a student killed by a crocodile in the county.
The deceased, who was in Form 3, was washing at a river in Nogirwet, Chepalungu Sub County, when the reptile attacked him.
Branch Secretary Desmond Langat lamented that although the government has promised prompt compensation, nothing has been given yet.

“When a goat is hit by a vehicle in Narok, everything comes to a standstill until a compensation of sh 100,000 is given per goat. But here, we lost a human being, but nothing has been given. This is so sad,” he said.
Addressing the press, he decried discriminatory compensation and cited prompt compensation whenever livestock are hit by vehicles in the neighbouring Narok County.
He now demands immediate compensation, threatening industrial action when schools reopen next term.
Making Mathematics an optional subject, Langat termed the move detrimental to the country’s economy and livelihoods since most tutors from the region teach mathematics and sciences.
“Mathematics is a very important subject. We are surprised that the government wants to make the subject optional. Many teachers from this region teach mathematics and science subjects. If Mathematics is made optional, where will these teachers go?” he questioned.
“As a Union, we will not allow this to happen.”
KNUT now wants the suggestion shielded, vowing to protect the subject.
