The Kenya National Union of Teachers’ Union (KNUT) Nyamira Executive Secretary Evans Obiri has warned Secondary, College and University students against betting during this long December Holiday.
Obiri said that many youth take a lot of time using mobile phones to bet on various betting sites and when they lose money they despairingly resort to commit suicide to cover their disappointment and shame.
He told the students to use their phones well to do constructive activities like researching on writing good business proposals, care of environment and how to start personal income projects with little money instead of engaging destructive affairs.
The Unionist also blamed parents for failure to teach their children on self-control and moral uprightness.

“Too much freedom is not good to our children let parents adopt restricted life in their children at their early stages of growth and development to enable to be responsible as they mature.” He said.
Obiri told teachers to guide parents on how they can be of great help during the long December holiday by monitoring their children to complete class work assignments.
He asserted that parents can also join their children through structured book reading to encourage reading culture or engaging them in church activities that are tailored to instill in them virtues like compassion and honesty.
The Unionist decried increased use of beer among the youth blaming the government for allowing illicit sales of alcohol in unlicensed kiosks in the villages.
