Teachers across the country have a fresh opportunity to further their education following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Open University of Kenya.

According to an official circular dated April 30, 2026, the agreement grants KNUT members a 16% tuition fee waiver, a move aimed at making higher education more accessible and affordable for teachers and their families.

In the communication addressed to branch executive secretaries, the KNUT Secretary General, Collins Oyuu, confirmed that the programme is already underway, with several members having benefited. However, he noted that the uptake remains lower than expected.

“The waiver was intended to benefit KNUT members, their spouses, and biological dependants,” the circular stated, urging union leaders to intensify awareness among members.

Dependants seeking to benefit from the programme are required to complete member introductory forms available at local KNUT branch offices. These records will then be submitted to the union’s head office for auditing and verification.

The union has now called on its branches to promptly disseminate the information and encourage eligible members to take advantage of the opportunity.

Education stakeholders view the initiative as a significant step toward enhancing professional development among teachers, particularly in a rapidly evolving academic landscape that increasingly demands continuous learning and upskilling.

With the cost of education often cited as a major barrier, the 16% waiver is expected to ease the financial burden and open doors for more teachers and their families to pursue higher education.
