KNUT explains why it snubbed TSC’s public participation meeting

Busia Woman Rep Sherry Ing'ura, Patrick Mulamba, and Geoffrey Ekasiba at Faridi Sacco's AGM on the weekend. They cited reasons they did not attend a public participation forum organized by TSC recently.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has revealed why it did not attend a stakeholders meeting to endorse the amendment of the TSC Act 2012.

Speaking during Faridi Sacco’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Busia Polytechnic on the weekend, KNUT official Patrick Mulamba said the Act contains grey areas which will subject teachers to immense suffering if the amendments are passed.

“It’s going to make us irrelevant. As head teachers, you will be irrelevant because when you will be heading a comprehensive school, some parts will not be under your custody,” he said.

Mulamba, who is the Busia Executive Secretary, also objected to the move by TSC to hand them over to the Director of Pensions at National Treasury upon retirement. This is also contained in the Act.

“Teachers are employed by TSC, but when they retire, they are handed over to the Directorate of Pensions. We want a retirement desk at TSC so that when we retire, TSC makes claims on our behalf; and even when you are dead, the issues of retirement benefits will not be complicated,” he said.

Mulamba’s sentiments were echoed by his Teso counterpart Geoffrey Ekasiba, who said they cannot sign a document which does not favour teachers.
