- Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai has intervened to stop students from paying a proposed KSh6,000 penalty following a dormitory fire.
- The damaged dormitory will be renovated using NG-CDF emergency funds.
- The legislator has urged learners to protect school facilities and embrace discipline.
Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai has reassured more than 600 students and over 500 parents of Ithangathi Girls Senior Secondary School following a dormitory fire allegedly started by students.
In a message addressed to the school community, the legislator described the incident as unfortunate and urged learners to appreciate and safeguard educational facilities and investments made to support their learning and future.
“I know you are proud to be daughters of Kusaasa. Daddy gave you the best dormitory in Kitui County, and the attempt to bring it down was a very unfortunate decision,” Mbai said.
The MP highlighted several development projects he has initiated at the school, including a modern dormitory completed two years ago, a state-of-the-art science laboratory that is now 85 per cent complete, and plans to acquire a 58-seater Isuzu school bus in the next financial year.
Following the fire, the school management had proposed imposing a KSh6,000 penalty on each student before learning resumed.
Mbai, however, said he intervened and successfully appealed to the school’s Board of Management to waive the proposed charges.
He further announced that the damaged dormitory would be rehabilitated using National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) emergency funds, sparing parents from meeting the repair costs.
“Therefore, no student will pay the KSh6,000 penalty, and the dormitory will be renovated within the shortest time possible,” he said.
Commitment to restoring learning
The MP also announced that his office would visit the school to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate restoration efforts.
He commended the Board of Management, the principal, non-teaching staff and students for their response to the incident while emphasising the importance of discipline and responsible behaviour among learners.

Mbai expressed optimism that the rehabilitation programme would restore normal learning as quickly as possible while preserving the investments made in improving the school’s infrastructure.
