Kitui celebrates 49th African Child Day with focus on children with disabilities

The 49th African Child Day was marked early in Kitui County on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at Mutomo School for the Deaf in Mutomo District.

The African Child Day is observed on June 16 every year, but in Kitui County within Kenya, it was observed early. Planning and budgeting for children’s rights: Progress since 2010 is the theme of this year.

The Mutomo School for the Deaf event was organised by the Kitui Development Centre (KDC) and the Wendo Family Foundation in partnership with the Kitui County government, Kenya’s government, Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), Compassion International, Kenya Youth Federation (KYF), Mutomo Mission Hospital, Kyatune Special Primary School and SMPi Enterprises.

Some hundreds of the schoolchildren attended the ceremony, where cooking, blood donation, tree growing and first aid demonstration were the event’s activities.

In his speech, Kitui Development Centre official, Erick Nyamai, highly appreciated their partners, the children, the parents and the teachers, among others, for having attended the event well.

Nyamai is also a Kenya Youth Federation official. And he is also a Wendo Family Foundation official.

The Mutomo Divisional Curriculum Support Officer (CSO), Benjamin Syeng, also addressed the function among many others. He highly thanked the event’s organisers.

And he also highly thanked the parents for having attended the event. “We know that you love your children. God bless you a lot. The children are ours and we love them and we are loving them,” he said.
