The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Kisumu Chapter elected a new leadership over the weekend in tension‑filled polls at Tom Mboya Labour College, where long‑serving executive secretary Zablon Awange lost his seat.

County sports secretary George Osura defeated Awange, a result announced amid protests and claims of irregularities from some participants.

The elections saw several positions retained or newly filled. Robert Ogaja clinched the chairmanship, while Dorice Adhiambo secured the treasurer’s post. The organising secretary position was taken by Ogallo “Kogallo,” with Onyando J.M. elected vice chairperson. Oduor J. was voted assistant executive secretary, and Simon Atito became vice treasurer. The secondary secretary post was firmly won by Obuoyo Calvin.

In the tertiary docket, Jackie India was elected tertiary secretary. The chapter also filled gender representation roles: Elizabeth Akoo was elected gender secretary, with Obao Nancy as first assistant gender secretary, Irene Hawi as second assistant gender secretary (PLWD), and Winnie Awuor as third assistant gender secretary. George Okeyo was also elected to the leadership team.

Earlier, Awange alleged that education directors and school principals had meddled in the exercise, raising concerns about the integrity of the process. Awange, who has served two terms, is known for championing members’ rights, including fighting unfair transfers and arbitrary disciplinary actions. His loss marks a significant shift in the chapter’s leadership after years of his visibility and advocacy.

Following the results, Osura pledged to work with those who lost and emphasised reconciliation within the union. He said the chapter’s focus should now turn to unity and service delivery for members across Kisumu County. “We will work together and preach reconciliation,” Osura said, signalling an attempt to calm tensions and consolidate the new leadership’s mandate.
