Kisumu East Member of Parliament Shakeel Shabbir has publicly apologised to teachers at St Peter’s Kindu Secondary School following public backlash over a viral video in which he harshly scolded teachers in front of students and parents.
In the video that sparked outrage across the education sector and on social media, the legislator appeared to lecture teachers in front of learners about poor academic performance, prompting criticism for what many termed as unprofessional and humiliating conduct.
Speaking during a press briefing on July 13, 2025, Shabbir admitted that he acted emotionally. However, he maintained that his concerns about academic standards at the school remain valid.

“I acknowledge that I acted emotionally, and I regret how I expressed myself. However, the academic issues I raised are real and need urgent attention,” he said. “I was carried by emotions.”
The apology comes after widespread condemnation from education stakeholders, teacher unions, and the public, who termed the MP’s actions as disrespectful to the teaching profession and in violation of the dignity expected of public servants.
The Education Stakeholders Association of Kenya (ESAK) had earlier called for the MP to apologise unconditionally and show respect to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) officials and the broader school community.
Photos from the event show the MP addressing the media and seated among teachers and parents during a reconciliatory meeting at the school.
As the controversy settles, stakeholders now hope the incident sparks constructive dialogue on how best to address performance issues in schools—without undermining teachers’ authority or morale.
