Kisii leaders alarmed over thousands of candidates yet to join high school

Various leaders from Kisii County have decried the high number of students who sat for the 2023 KCPE examinations but are yet to join secondary schools.

While addressing a public baraza at Nyaguta Secondary, Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheel Jhandah asked residents to identify students who need financial assistance and forward their names so that his office can organize how they will continue their education.

He also asked parents unable to raise school fees to register their children with government programmes to take advantage of government support.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha branch Executive Secretary Lucy Machuki blamed village elders, Nyumba Kumi groups and other community organizations for not prioritizing education.

She stated that such groups are at the vantage of mobilizing communities to take children to school because they are much closer to them.

Machuki promised to liaise with area MPs, MCAs and financial institutions to seek financial assistance to benefit needy students.

The Union boss urged the area NG-CDF and county bursary education committees to prioritize orphaned and extreme cases when disbursing bursary funds.

According to data from education offices, the county has 2,406 KCPE candidates while Nyamira has 3,438 who have not joined high school yet.

West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka called for quick government intervention to ensure the students are enrolled in high school.

Bobadi Constituency’s Mekonge location Chief Alfred Sosi threatened to arrest any parent whose child has not joined secondary school, saying that it was a violation of the children’s rights.
