Kipkelion West MP Hillary Kosgey has called upon legislatures to shoot down the TSC (Amendment) Bill 2024 on Teachers Professional Development (TPD) course which is set to be tabled in Parliament.

Speaking during thanksgiving ceremony at Sacred Hill Girls on March 28, the legislature said that the refresher course after every three years is punitive to teachers adding that a teacher once qualified is a teacher until the retirement.

“The teachers of Kenya and their rights must be protected and will be protected through their elected representatives,” he said.

He asked all education representatives to call out all education stakeholders to comb out anything and everything that is anti-teachers.

The MP added that he will take it upon himself to shoot down the bill if education stakeholders will not act right in protecting the rights and welfare of all teachers.

TPD was introduced two years ago amid protests from teachers with first module, introductory module, started in September 22, 2021, when TSC first launched the programme.

The Commission picked Mt Kenya University, Kenyatta University, Riara University and the Kenya Education Management Institute, purposely to offer the professional training to teachers but had promised to increase the service providers through a tender in 2022.

The programme requires teachers to pay KSh6000 for the TPD module course, which the teachers’ employer put as a consideration for promotion.
