The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) has raised concerns about the ongoing communal conflicts along the Kuria-Trans Mara South border.
Area KESSHA Chairperson David Ololisha says the situation has hampered learning activities, with many teachers unable to reach their workstations.
Addressing the press, he said tension is high on the Mashangwa – Angatta border due to land disputes, as cattle theft at Enkiwanja causes suspicion between the Kuria and Maasai communities.
“Learning on the Mashangwa – Angatta border has been affected due to insecurity. Teachers and learners from each side cannot cross to the other side,” he noted.
According to him, learners are also affected, as they cannot attend school whenever animal theft occurs, which he says is worrying.

Ololisha now wants the problem urgently addressed so that learners from the area access education like their counterparts in other parts of the country.
“We would like the government to address this problem once and for all. We want the government to intervene so that teachers can continue their work and children get education in a secure environment like their counterparts in other parts of the country,” added Ololisha.
The Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association, Trans Mara South Secretary Leonard Ojunju, echoed these sentiments and lauded the security apparatus in the area for taking action to tackle the problem.
Ojunju, from Nyamasongoro Primary School, located on the Kuria – Angatta border, says safety is key, adding that the association has communicated with the relevant offices concerning the security situation in the area.
“Safety is very important, and you can’t force a teacher to come to school when tension is high. We have communicated with the education officials and informed them about the security situation in this area,” said Ojunju.
