Kenya Reinsurance Corporation (Kenya Re) has launched a distribution exercise of assistive and mobility devices that will see more than 390 persons with disabilities in Kachibora and Saboti sub-counties in Trans Nzoia County benefit.

Through its flagship corporate social responsibility Niko Fiti campaign, the parastatal is targeting to make life better for this marginalized group, including children in school.

Speaking to the press yesterday, the Group Managing Director (MD) Hillary Maina revealed that they are partnering with the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) to make a positive impact on People Living With Disability (PWDs) in the country.

“We are not only supporting the government’s goal of including PWDs into society but also changing lives. By enabling them to move around unassisted, they are able to go to school, start business, and do activities that truly make them independent,” he said.

The MD further revealed that the exercise is in line with Kenya’s vision to enhance inclusivity and diversity by enabling more people to participate in activities that improve their livelihoods.

“Kenya Re has a vision to secure the future for our stakeholders and our Niko Fiti initiative is one of the ways we are doing this,” he said.

He affirmed that it is important for workplaces to entrench inclusion policies for PWDs, including buildings being fitted with structures that allow easy access by PWDs.

He said that the Niko Fiti Campaign has improved the lives of over 11,800 PWDs since its inception in 2011, adding that its inception model is informed by a national disability survey on PWD demographics, socio-economic/cultural characteristics, disability causes, gender challenges, coping mechanisms, and rehabilitation services.
