Athi-River Queens from Mavoko Sub-county are now the new Champions of the second edition of Governor Wavinya Cup 2024 which was graced by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The damsels dribbled their way to the highly-competitive finals where they eventually beat Kathiani Queens from Mwala Sub-County 1- 0 to emerge the overall Champions in the women’s category.
Kathiani Queens fought hard to take home Ksh500,000 as the second runner-up.
In the men’s category, Katwanyaa from Matungulu Sub-County defeated Kyevaluki from Kathiani Sub-County 2-0 to win Ksh1 Million in a fast-paced encounter watched by thousands of fans at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
The third-place play-off was won by Makongeni FC from Mavoko Sub-county who edged out Mamba FC 2-1 to pocket Ksh100,000 in the men’s category while Avengers Queens from Machakos Town Sub-county thrashed Kavweani Starlets from Masinga Sub-county 2-0 to bag a similar amount.
The County Executive Team, captained by the Governor’s son Charlie Oduwale, executed sleek passes to beat the County Assembly team 2-0 in a curtain raiser match at the Stadium.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka who graced the ceremony said he was impressed by the immense talent displayed by the teams. He furter faulted President William Ruto for not being keen on Kenya hosting the Afcon Games in 2027, A platform where such talents could be exposed to the World.
“It’s a pity that instead of President Ruto preparing the country to host Afcon in 2027 he is busy talking about vaccinating cattle,” said Mr Musyoka.
Mr Musyoka said he looked forward to Machakos County producing the next professional footballers for the country due to programmes such as the Governor’s Cup.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti said the broader vision of the tournament was to create professional career pathways for young people both locally and internationally.
“My administration is keen on tapping into the sports economy. I dream of a future where players from Machakos will score goals for our country at the World Cup championship, I dream of a future where the next millionaires in every village in Machakos will be sportsmen and women.” said Governor Ndeti.

A total of 640 teams comprised of 10,420 youths across the County participated in the tournament which began in September.
