Ruth Chepkemoi Ptiamor, a student of St Elizabeth Girls’ Murpur in West Pokot County, has been feted for winning an award in an essay writing competition.
The essay on the elimination of child labour by the talented young student emerged as the best nationally, making her recognised for her outstanding work in an event graced by Chief Justice Martha Koome in Nairobi.
The Chief Justice, while lauding the fete, said the achievement is particularly notable given that St Elizabeth Girls’ Murpur is a rural school, demonstrating that excellence can be achieved even in the remotest of places.
Report by the competition vetting panel read “Ptiamor’s essay showcased her understanding of the complexities of child labour, which affects millions of children worldwide, particularly in low-income countries.”
It further indicated that Child labour is a significant problem globally, with approximately 160 million children aged 5 to 17 involved in child labour, according to the International Labour Organisation. In sub-Saharan Africa, more than half of the affected children live in low and lower-middle-income countries. The issue is often linked to poverty, lack of access to quality education, and weak labour laws.

According to Principal Carolyne Menach, the achievement was a testament to her hard work and dedication, as the institution is committed to nurturing student talents. She encouraged other students to pursue their passions.
“This recognition highlights the importance of supporting rural schools and students, who often face unique challenges in accessing quality education,” remarked the Principal.
Elated Menach further said, “By winning this award, Ptiamor has demonstrated that with determination and the right support, students from rural areas can excel and make a meaningful impact in their communities. Her achievement serves as an inspiration to her peers and a reminder of the potential that lies within every student, regardless of their location or background.”
