Journalists celebrated for their contribution to girl-child protection

Girls at Thunguri Primary School in Othaya receive sanitary towels from the Kui Kibaki Foundation. Journalists have been awarded in the Imarisha Msichana Media Awards that recognize their contribution to protecting the girl-child.

The Imarisha Msichana Media Awards 2024 has honoured journalists who have excelled in gender responsive reporting, recognizing their impactful work in bringing attention to challenges faced by young girls in Kenya.

These issues ranged from teenage pregnancies to barriers in accessing education.

The event celebrated these media professionals’ dedication to creating awareness, advocating for change, and empowering the youth.

In the news category, Monica Nyele of Mitume Radio based in Kajiado County was named the 2nd runners up, Stephen Astariko of The Star newspaper earned the 1st runners up spot and his colleague Tony Wafula claimed the top award.

In the feature category, Jared Nyangira of Nyanza Times received the 2nd runners up recognition while KBC Radio’s Millicent Kubai took 1st runners up with features that captivated audiences by blending empathy with hard hitting facts.

Monica Nyele again demonstrated her journalistic  prowess by clinching the top spot in this category with compelling reports that amplified the voices of marginalized girls.

The crowning achievement of the night was the overall winner award presented to Nancy Kering’ of Citizen TV (Kajiado County).Her work was celebrated for its exceptional storytelling and deep-rooted commitment to championing the rights and needs of girls across Kenya.

The organizers lauded the winners for using their platforms as conduits for awareness and change.

The awards reinforced the transformative power of journalism in shaping a better future for young girls, turning spotlighted issues into calls for advocacy and reform.
