The Interior ministry is planning to start an anti-drug abuse sensitization programme in schools to reduce the menace among young people.
Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki says this has been informed by an alarming increase of drug use by the youth.
The CS said this when he appeared before the National Assembly Wednesday, charging drug and substance abuse as a major national security threat.
“Apart from terrorism and banditry, drug and substance abuse is among the top security threats the country is dealing with,” said the CS.
Away from schools, the CS said the government has also put in place adequate measures to confront drug abuse among the rest of the population.
He added that they plan to strengthen NACADA by giving it more powers in the war against drug and substance abuse.
Kindiki noted that the ministry has focused on suppressing demand and supply for illicit drugs.
He told the House the ministry has instituted stringent measures to be met by manufacturers of alcoholic drinks before they get licensed, saying the country has sufficient corrective centres and more will be established to provide rehabilitation services to addicts.
Dagoreti North MP Beatrice Elachi asked the CS to deploy security to deal with foreign drug dealers operating at Kilimani area in her Constituency.
“Foreigners dealing in drug trafficking are operating at Kilimani area, destroying lives of our young people. I call for quick action from the CS to dismantle the racket and nab them,” said Elachi.
