Fire has razed down two dormitories at different learning institutions in Migori County last night.

The principal St. Peters Abwao Secondary School – one of the schools affected – in Suna West Mr. Jackson Ogola while confirming the incident told the Education News the fire began at about 8pm during night preps.

“I was in the staffroom assisting some boys who had come to consult me on mathematical questions before I was called that there was fire in the dormitory.” Said Ogola.

He noted that despite having enough fire extinguishers in the school and the students rushing to try and put off the fire which had spread so fast from one side of the dormitory and consumed the whole building, they were unable to salvage any of the students’ belongings.

Over 280 students were affected by the fire after they were left without personal items, beddings and a place to sleep. The principal has however called on well-wishers and education stakeholders to come in and assist the boys continue with their stay at the institution for the purpose of learning without breaking and going back home.

“Its not easy to pick up from now and therefore I wish to plead with education stakeholders and well-wishers to come to the aid of the students whose items were destroyed in the fire as this will enable the institution continue with learning exercises without any break according to the second term academic calendar.” Pleaded Ogola.

At Osingo mixed Secondary School in God Jope ward, Suna East a dormitory with a capacity of 76 was also razed down by fire last night. The students’ properties were also not salvaged according to the school principal Mr.John Umani.

“76 of our students were using the razed down dormitory and all their personal effects were consumed my the yesternights’ fire,” said Umani.
