The Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department for Higher Education Dr Beatrice Inyangala has supported the new public universities and TVETS funding model which was adopted in the 2023/2024 financial year.

The PS in a speech read on her behalf by the Secretary Administration Fredrick Ndambuki during the opening of a two-day workshop on evaluation of the New Funding Model (NFM) in Naivasha yesterday said that the model is aimed at benefiting students more, unlike the previous one which saw schools benefitting.

“The New Funding Model is designed to align funding more closely with the needs of individual students rather than institutions. This approach aims to better address the diverse economic backgrounds of our students and ensure that financial support is available to those who need it most,” she said.

At the same time, Inyangala revealed that the government has verified and allocated funds to a significant number of applicants in higher institutions; with 110,223 university students’ applications being verified and allocated Ksh11.74 billion in scholarships and Ksh12.47 billion in loans, totalling Ksh24.21 billion.

Consequently, 104,878 TVET trainees who applied have been verified and allocated Ksh3.90 billion in scholarships and Ksh3.87 billion in loans, totalling Ksh7.77 billion.

“So far, loans amounting to Ksh13.53 billion have been disbursed to universities and TVETs for student upkeep and tuition. Additionally, scholarships amounting to Ksh5.29 billion have been disbursed to 39 public universities for the first semester’s tuition fees,” Dr Inyangala said.

The aim of the workshop which will ends today aims to reflect on the implementation of the first cycle of the New Funding Model.
